The Oxford Dictionary gives a meaning for the word artificial as  "made by art; not natural".

 

In secondary school, diagrams of the rain cycle, charts of little stick people showing increased mortality (during the industrial revolution), and graphic analysis of sentences, felt very distant to me. But by the act of mass drawing, we conjured them up. There was never any question of them being propositions.

 

Technical drawing lessons on Wednesday afternoons were a triple period. We had to travel off site to some old school rooms. My friends and I were fascinated by this coded visual information, so every two or three weeks, after registration, we set out for lessons but arrived at the cinema instead.
